Old Bauxite Mines

Old Bauxite Mines

UNDER THE OLD BAUXITE MINES of Amorgos on the east side of the island, you will find a unique dive site that bears witness to the once bustling mines.

After a steep drop off there is a plateau at 18 metres where you can see parts of the equipment used to load the mined bauxite to different cargo ships. Parts of old steel wagons with their wheels still attached and pieces of the tracks on which they were pushed can be found on several points along this dive site.

Continuing to the north by keeping the reef on the left side, you will see several rock formations creating gentle slopes interspersed with dramatic walls.

A BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPE DIVE  loca-ted “just around the corner” from our popular cavern.

This deep wall dive starts with a beautiful wall that slopes down to about 40 meters. Because of the excellent visibility, you are always able to see all the way down to the sandy bottom.
The wall is filled with pockets where you will be able to find diverse micro marine life, sponges, nudibranch and smaller fishes such as wrasse, bream & cardinal fish. The occasional large grouper can be found hiding in the wall.

Following the wall you will find yourself at a point where the sea melts into the dramatic high slopes of Nikouria Island. Here you can take a second to admire and absorb the magic of the waves breaking above you towards the stonewalls of the Island and the soothing blueness of the open sea.

A MIND BLOWING DIVE at a short boat ride to the western tip of the Island of Nikouria. This deep wall dive is truly fascinating with a stunning cavern at around 25m! It is the closet experience to skydiving you can get in the sea.

Begin the dive with a treat, you will spot a large amphora, lying on the skirt of the wall. We believe it is remains from one of the ships that sank during “the battle of Amorgos” in 322 BC.  The depth stretches down to an approximate of 60m. giving the absolute sensation of weightlessness.

If you pay extra attention you might spot one stingray or two dancing around at the bottom of the sea or passing barracuda and tuna. Explore the small pockets in the wall, filled with marine life. At the depth of 25m. the wall opens up into a large but very shallow cave with high walls where divers can safely enter and enjoy the experience of it.

This dive site is a great choice if you want to have a mind blowing, deep adventure!

A BEAUTIFUL & COLORFUL DIVE  just beside the island of Nikouria, on the costs of the tiny Gramvonissi island. We always knew it was there, but two years ago we discovered the beauty it reveals under water. This new dive site is accessible for all levels from snorkelers to Pro.

For the beginners there is a beautiful lunar landscape which peels back to reveal numerous small caves, covered in corals. The arch is the perfect depth to give a Discover diver a special treat. The shallow depth means the light is stunning. Schools of fish pass you by as you swim around. Plenty of Spiral worms, Octopus and Moray Eeels also love the island.

For more experienced divers, there is the added bonus of a drop down to a depth of 40 m + and the pock marked wall filled with Moray eels, lobsters and Fan mussels. Around this area is where octopi and cuttlefish are seen. Gramvonissi also offers the most beautiful and colorful swim through that we have to offer, its is absolutely covered with sponges and corals!
