Assistant Instructor

Gain experience while lending a helping hand

single title divider

The Fun Part

The Assistant Instructor qualification is the next step after becoming a Divemaster. Working closely with an Instructor, you’ll fine-tune your dive skills, refine your rescue skills so you can anticipate and easily solve common problems as well as get an introduction into teaching scuba diving, and gain professional experiences so you can become a role model to divers everywhere. Working as an assistant instructor allows you to collect valuable teaching experience, practice briefings, teach academics, and conduct limited in-water training.

Who should take this program?

Do you love scuba diving and want to share your passion for diving with the rest of the world by turning your hobby into your career, but want to take it step by step? Then join us for the assistant instructor training to start on your instructor career path. Our center is perfect for starting your career as we have the perfect training conditions with a calm and shallow bay with amazing visibility and easy access to open water sites. Combined with a relaxed island life and many, many years of scuba experience we create a fun environment to develop your career.

To begin the program you need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold the Divemaster certification from SSI or an equivalent institution
  • Have obtained the React Right or equivalent first aid training within the past 24 months.
  • Have at least 60 logged and verified dives
  • Have a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

If you are missing some of the above, do not hesitate to get in contact and we can help you obtain the missing ones and prepare you to start the assistant instructor training! And if after finishing the training you wish to continue, you can continue to finish the remainder of the instructor training and pass the Instructor Evaluation to become an Open Water Diving Instructor.

What will you learn?

The assistant instructor course takes 5 days and is the first introduction into training new divers, the professional instructor lifestyle and sharing your passions! Through the course you learn how to assist a scuba instructor in courses, how to demonstrate skills under the supervision of an instructor (but not conduct open water and higher courses yourself.) You  do learn to independently conduct Try Scuba experiences, the Scuba Skills Update course and the Perfect Buoyancy specialty and guiding.

Some of the other topics covered include:

  • Professional duties
  • Program administration – records, scheduling etc.
  • How to conduct academic sessions
  • How in-water training is organized and conducted
  • SSI philosophies and your career within SSI

What scuba gear will you use?

As a dive professional, you’ll want to have all your basic scuba equipment for your own comfort and safety, but for training purposes you will be able to use the dive center’s equipment. During practical skills exercises, like underwater mapping and search and recovery, you’ll use a compass, floats, marker buoys, lift bags and slates.

We recommend having your own dive computer, mask & snorkel, fins and an SMB. If needed we are happy to advise you on the equipment to best fit your goals and needs and help you with purchasing through our high-quality partners such as Cressi, Aqualung and Mares.

What learning materials will you need?

When you sign up to the program you will receive access to the SSI online learning materials which can be used through the SSI Website/App. These consist of text and video material as well as knowledge reviews and can be downloaded for offline use. Before starting your in-person sessions, you should work through and complete the eLearning at your own pace.

During the in-person parts of your training you will receive a variety of academic and practical sessions both on land and in the water to prepare you as best as we can.

Absolutely professional diving center with multilingual crew and dive masters. Offer Freediving and Scuba. Great spots with – for Greece – a good amount of interesting fish, caves and ancient stuff like marble blocks and amphoras left over from a sunken ship.

Highly recommendable address and a must if you think about diving somewhere around Amorgos!

How long does it take to become a professional?

how long it takes to gain a pro qualification depends on the program you choose. The first Pro Scuba qualification – Divemaster, takes 15 days to complete, while if you already are one and are wanting to become an Open Water Instructor it takes 10 course days + 2 examination days.

For Freediving, you can receive your Basic Freedive Instructor qualification in 3 days, while a full Level 1 Instructor training takes 10 days

Is it difficult to become a Pro?

Completing your professional training is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience! 🙂
You learn a lot about both, diving as a professional and yourself through the process.

Can I earn money by being a Dive Pro?

Yes, absolutely! Earning an income is the main perk of turning your hobby into a career! The pay levels differ between the professional levels as well as between areas of the world.

In Europe, as an Instructor you can generally get paid around 1200 euros per month. As a Divemaster you can earn around 1000 euros.

Do I need to earn any personal equipment?

To do the course itself you don’t need to own any personal equipment, but as a working professional you will want to.

For the course we recommend having at least your own dive computer, mask & snorkel, fins and an SMB. We are also happy to advise you on choosing your personal equipment to match your goals and needs and can help you find great deals through our partners such as Cressi, Aqualung and Mares.

Why should I become a professional?

Because it is a wonderful feeling working at a job you love! If you love diving and the lifestyle and people it comes with, why not turn it into your profession and make money while enjoying your days.

What can I do and where can I work?

Once you complete your qualifications, you can stay to gain some work experience with us!

With the SSI professional qualification you are able to work at SSI diving centers anywhere in the world! You can see the current available job positions on the SSI website.

There are also various Facebook groups for dive jobs worldwide with new positions shared every single day. look at groups such as Diving Jobs WorldWide, Diving Jobs All Around The World and many area and country specific ones too.
