Welcome to the course that will change your life! Being an SSI Open Water Instructor will allow you to travel the world and earn money by doing what you love and spending your days in the water. You will learn how to teach scuba diving and allow people to find the same passion for the marine world as you do. It is a tough but an incredibly rewarding course. 

Who should take this program?

Do you love scuba diving and want to share your passion for diving with the rest of the world by turning your hobby into your career? Then join us to become an SSI Open Water Instructor. Here in Amorgos, we have the best conditions for learning! We have a calm, shallow bay with amazing visibility, and easy access to open air sites. Combined with the plentiful open air classroom spaces, our many many years of scuba experiences and the relaxed island life we have everything to create the best learning conditions. 

To begin the program you need to: 

• Be at least 18 years old
• Hold the Divemaster certification from SSI or an equivalent institution 
• Have obtained the React Right or equivalent first aid training within the past 24 months. 
• Have at least 60 logged and verified dives
• Have a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

What will you learn?

The Instructor course takes 10 days plus 2 days of Instructor Evaluations (Exams). The full Open Water Instructor course includes the assistant instructor training in the start. Through the course you refine your own diving skills, you learn how to assist other instructors, how to demonstrate all skills, how to guide dives and most importantly how to conduct the Open Water diver course, with some of the other topics covered include:

• Professional duties and SSI philosophies 
• Program administration – records, scheduling etc. 
• How to conduct academic sessions 
• How in-water training is organized and conducted
• Specialty programs, advanced adventurer, enriched air nitrox,
• Conducting dive guide training
• Conducting the stress and rescue course
• The business of diving and SSI, how to advance your career

The in-water training will introduce you to your new office and ensure you have professional level demonstration skills, the ability to safely conduct courses, as well as the ability to recognise and correct any mistakes to ensure your students become confident and capable divers. 

What scuba gear will you use?

As a dive professional, you’ll want to have all your basic scuba equipment for your own comfort and safety, but for training purposes you will be able to use the dive center’s equipment. During practical skills exercises, like underwater mapping and search and recovery, you’ll use a compass, floats, marker buoys, lift bags and slates.

We recommend having your own dive computer, mask & snorkel, fins and an SMB. If needed we are happy to advise you on the equipment to best fit your goals and needs and help you with purchasing through our high-quality partners such as Cressi, Aqualung and Mares. 

What learning materials will you need?

When you sign up to the program you will receive access to the SSI online learning materials which can be used through the SSI Website/App. These consist of text and video material as well as knowledge reviews and can be downloaded for offline use. Before starting your in-person sessions, you should work through and complete the eLearning at your own pace.

During the in-person parts of your training you will receive a variety of academic and practical sessions both on land and in the water to prepare you as best as we can.

Additional information

The Open Water Instructor course takes a minimum of 12 days (including Instructor Evaluation – IE) but can be adapted to your current qualifications and future goals.
