Learning to freedive is one of the most beautiful experiences! It is the purest form of diving and gives you an incomparable feeling of oneness with the ocean! By learning what is happening to your body when you freedive you learn to truly connect your body and mind as one, allowing you to become a silent observer of the underwater world. Who should take this program?

If you enjoy snorkeling, but want to be able to have more intimate marine life encounters and discover more of the underwater world at every corner of this planet without having to carry around lots of equipment, then this course is perfect for you! Freediving gives you the advantage of being a silent observer beneath the waves which means it allows you to have much more intimate interactions with marine life. 

This programme is open to everyone, whether you already have some experience or whether you have never broken below the surface. Through this course you will learn new things about both your mind and your body and gain a strong admiration for the sport and the underwater world.

Once certified, you can freedive with a certified buddy in open water up to a depth of 20 meters and explore a variety of stunning underwater ecosystems around the world. 

What will you learn?

Learning to freedive with SSI is easier than you think. In this program, online materials and in-person academic sessions, pool/confined water sessions and open water training dives are combined to help you become a confident and safe freediver in no time. 

Through the 4 day program you will learn about human physiology and what happens to our bodies and minds underwater, as well as all the proper skills and knowledge in order to freedive safely and in the most relaxed way to a maximum depth of 20 meters. You will prepare for in-water sessions through some special stretching and relaxation techniques which will offer you better respiration ability and muscle flexibility. This will be combined with techniques of breathing before and after a dive, and familiarizing yourself with diaphragmatic breathing which will eventually allow you to take your deepest breath ever! 

The in-water sessions will include both static and dynamic breath hold exercises and will build up to learning a variety of proper techniques for descending and ascending

What gear will you use?

While not as much as scuba diving, freediving still involves the use of some gear. You will use and be provided with a freediving mask, snorkel and fins, as well as a weather appropriate freediving wetsuit. You will also use and learn about a freediving safety buoy and lines. 

If you are wanting to invest in personal gear, our instructors would be delighted to advise you on the gear most fit for your goals, and our in-house shop also has a selection of freediving gear available for purchase. 

What learning materials will you need?

When you sign up to the course you gain access to SSI Freediver online learning materials which are best completed before starting your in-person lessons.The materials can be accessed through SSI Website/App and be downloaded for offline use. You will also receive an in-person academic learning session prior to the in-water training.
