Basic Diver

The Fun Part

During the Basic Diver program you will get to take your first breaths underwater, discover the feeling of near weightlessness as you learn to “fly” through the underwater world and have incredible close-up interactions with marine life. You will get to experience diving in both the shallow beachfront waters (<5 m) and at one of our other dive sites to the maximum depth of 12 meters! Who should take this program?

Want to discover the underwater world a little more than just off the beach, but don’t have the time or aren’t ready to commit to a full certification course? Then the SSI Basic Diver program might be just right for you! The SSI Basic Diver program is one step up from the try dive. In this program you will learn the skills and knowledge to dive to up to 12 meters deep together with an SSI professional!

The course can be completed in 2 days and includes 1 academic session, 1 pool/confined water session (max 5m deep) and 1 open water session (max 12m deep) from a boat. Once completed, the Basic Diver program allows you to dive under the direct supervision of an SSI professional to the maximum depth of 12 meters / 40feet for the next 6 months. For those next 6 months the academic and in water sessions can also be credited towards the SSI Scuba diver or Open Water Diver certification programs to make the next step in your diving adventure even easier.

If you have just completed your try dive and feel like you want a little more experience before fully committing, you can easily upgrade to a basic scuba diver with only 1 additional short academic session and 1 in water skills session that includes an open water dive. 

What will you learn?

During the program you will gain the knowledge, and safety rules and information needed for an introduction into scuba diving in both pool/confined and open water environments. You will also learn how to use the equipment needed for diving and train some basic skills required for both your comfort and safety. This will be achieved with the combination of online learning, the in person academic session, and 1 pool/confined water session and 1 open water training dive. 

Through it all you will also gain an appreciation for the underwater world that will surely make you want to come back to further your diving education and experience.

What scuba gear will you use?

The use of the full basic scuba gear is included in the course. This means you will be provided with a mask, snorkel and fins, a buoyancy compensating jacket that also holds your scuba tank, a scuba regulator that delivers air, a weight system, and an instrument to monitor the depth and air supply. You will also use a scuba wetsuit appropriate to the current temperatures.

What learning materials will you need?

• SSI Online learning materials. When you register for the course, you will receive online learning materials to be used either on the SSI website or App. These combine easy-read text and video content can also be downloaded to be used offline, this would be best completed before you start the in-person sessions.
• Before gettin in the water you will also receive one academic session to introduce you to the gear and safety rules so that you will be ready and comfortable in the water.
